Mind Where You Step

Mind Where You Step
2004
Mirror, fibre-glass insulation
Winchester, Hampshire

Drawing upon Mayhew’s interest in paths, and the direction that one chooses to travel in, consciously or otherwise, Mind Where You Step is at once a warning and an invitation to walk on and around this installation. This invitation to walk on potentially hazardous materials caused viewers to watch others’ behaviour, and in doing so reflect upon their own behaviour as some viewers tip-toed cautiously around the mirror on the padded insulation, whilst others hop-scotched playfully putting full weight on the mirror, enjoying the liberating crunch of the mirror breaking beneath their feet.
